Terrence Karpowicz was born in 1948 in Cleveland, OH and received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Albion College in Michigan before moving to New York City to pursue his career as an artist. In 1972, he became inspired to sculpt after assisting artist Mark di Suvero with an installation. Karpowicz was award a Fulbright-Hayes grant to the United Kingdom. He is particularly drawn to tension at the point of contact between disparate materials and works in the heaviest and lightest of materials to achieve precision, balance, and fine craftsmanship.
