Tom Otterness, born in Wichita, Kansas in 1952, is an American sculptor whose works adorn parks, plazas, subway stations, libraries, courthouses and museums in cities around the world. In New York, his most notable works are in Rockefeller Park in Battery Park City and in the 14th Street/8th Avenue subway station. His sculptures are filled with multiple meanings and allude to sex, class, money, and race. Known primarily as a public artist, Otterness’ aesthetic can be seen as a riff on capitalist realism.
