The anthracite industry fueled the Industrial Revolution in America. The best hard coal, slow and clean-burning deep mined “anthracite” was mined in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Stories and lore of the rough, gritty and dangerous lives of the immigrant coal miners of Scranton are known to the native population. Yanashot has used those stories (some horrific) along with historical research in Anthra-Sight to create a sculptural narrative of the Northeastern Pennsylvania anthracite coal industry through a body of mixed media sculpture. Anthracite coal, burnt culm ash, industry tools and relics are components Yanashot used to create these sculptural “sights”.
