Unit of Study VI.
Walter Dusenbery - Stone Portals to the Past, Present, and Future

Extensions

  • This is an excellent opportunity to teach a unit of study on Western and non-Western architecture.
  • Create a commission scenario. Students compete to design a portal for the scenario of the teacher's choice.

Example of steatite sculptures made by Nottingham High School students.

Reflection

Students sometimes underestimate the skill required to create work in stone. Creating a work in stone themselves encourages a greater understanding and appreciation for the work of others. The sculptural and architectural achievements of the past and present are brought into perspective when students discover the monumental effort required to achieve them. Lesson 2, although in clay not stone, brings attention to the use of architectural elements as sculpture. In our case students took a field trip to the newly constructed Hamilton Train Station to see examples of sculpture in public spaces. While there they observed a sculptural portal by Barbara Grygutis.
