The
How to Create a School Sculpture Garden Manual
1.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Nottingham High School
Sculpture Garden Project was conceived several years ago as the result of our
Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation funded curriculum project Up Close: A Focus
On Contemporary Sculpture. Nottingham was invited to join the International
Sculpture Center (ISC), publishers of Sculpture Magazine, and Grounds
For Sculpture (GFS), a 35-acre sculpture park and museum, in the design and
development of this contemporary sculpture curriculum for high school students.
The entire curriculum, Up Close: A Focus On Contemporary Sculpture, including
resources, is available free of charge online at the International Sculpture
Center's web site, www.sculpture.org.
Student ideas and responses to lessons were invaluable and were incorporated
into the development of the final document. In order to begin that project,
students visited Grounds For Sculpture and interviewed sculptors. An interview
with the students and internationally known sculptor Isaac Witkin can be accessed
in the archives of New Jersey Network's weekly program, State of the Arts.
Students investigated sculpture parks and gardens throughout the world by utilizing
the Sculpture Parks and Gardens Directory of the International Sculpture Center's
web site (www.
sculpture.org). This feature has proven to be invaluable in the sculpture
class as a virtual field trip to places not readily accessible to our students.
During a follow-up discussion to the sculpture curriculum, the students indicated
their interest in turning an unused interior school courtyard into a sculpture
garden. Nottingham High School Principal, Neil Campeas, indicated strong support
for this endeavor. It was in perfect alignment with his School Beautification
Project and the partner organizations, ISC and GFS, were eager to promote the
idea.
The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation graciously funded both a planning grant and
a two-year implementation grant that has allowed us to design the garden and
publish this web manual. We owe a particular debt of gratitude to Brooke Barrie,
Director and Curator of Grounds For Sculpture; Brian Carey, Grounds For Sculpture
Project Director; Christine Finkelstein, former Grounds For Sculpture Curator
of Education; Aylin Green, Grounds For Sculpture Office of Education and Volunteer
Services; Mary Catherine Johnson, Acting Executive Director of the International
Sculpture Center; Jeff Nathanson, former President and Executive Director of
the International Sculpture Center; Carol Sterling, former Director of Education
and Resource Center for the International Sculpture Center; Herbert Sensi, Landscape
Architect, ASLA; James Foran, Architect, AIA; John Hoagland, Landscape Contractor;
Scott Innocenzi, Architectural Drawing Teacher, Nottingham High School; Kathy
Catanese, Art Teacher, Nottingham High School; Neil Campeas, Principal, Nottingham
High School; Saula Cutter, Curriculum Supervisor; the Sculpture Garden Advisory
Board, and Amy Holmes, Editor; for their invaluable expertise.
