14. SCULPTURE GARDEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE

An advisory committee functions as an oversight committee. We suggest that you develop this group as early as possible in the project. The committee should include project consultants, the school principal, and representatives from the following groups: partner organizations, local arts council, maintenance staff, parents, staff, and students. Identify other members as needed, by their specific role in the process; for example, include the person in charge of fundraising.

Hold a preliminary meeting to give the group a chance to get to know one another and to share an overview of the scope of the project. Consider selecting a chair for the committee. Meet whenever there are milestones in your timeline. Invite the committee to review the student designs. Offer them the opportunity to share their ideas with each other.

You will be surprised at the network of support you can build through a group such as this. Members will have contacts that can reach out and connect you to an abundance of resources. The advisory committee can be a strong asset for building community support for your project. Its members can function as part of your fundraising efforts by spreading the news about your efforts throughout the community.
