Reflection

This particular set of lessons is the result of contacting the artist directly. I was overwhelmed by the work of Isaac Witkin at Grounds For Sculpture from my first encounter with it. Nottingham High School is located a few short blocks from Grounds For Sculpture. Our students frequently visit there on their own. When they discuss their responses to GFS they always talk about Isaac Witkin's extraordinary work.

I was fortunate to be the guest of The International Sculpture Center at one of their annual conferences. I promised myself that I would find Isaac Witkin and tell him how much joy and excitement his work brought to us. I approached him and told him of the students' great fondness for his work. He seemed surprised that his work affected teenage students so deeply. In response to my comments he offered to meet with my students at GFS. He told me how thrilled he was by our response to his work. He went so far as to invite some of the students to his studio.

I certainly never dreamed that my comments would evoke such generosity from this very busy sculptor. Here you see the results of our efforts. If you have an artist in your community reach out to him or her. Work with your community Arts Councils. During this entire project, every artist we approached responded positively to our requests. None were too busy to talk with students and share their work.
