A single-artist-designed sculpture garden, owned and maintained
by the City of Tucson Parks Department, this 3,500 sq.ft. pocket park
is in the heart of the El Presidio National Register Historic District.
Created by sculptor and public artist Barbara Grygutis in 1984, the Alene
Dunlop Smith Garden commemorates the founder of Tucson's first historic
district. Locally quarried volcanic rock and native plants combine with
human-scale ceramic sculpture, benches, and hand-made tile to create a
contemplative retreat in an active urban setting. The Commune of Faenza,
Italy recognized the Alene Dunlop Smith Garden with an award for art in
urban settings as part of a Quadrennial International Competition in 1988.
Open 24 hours daily, all months.
