The Burlington County College Sculpture Garden, located
on the grounds of the Pemberton campus of Burlington County College in
Pemberton, NJ, has been in existence since 1988. Supported by the College,
the Burlington County College Foundation, and the Burlington County Cultural
and Heritage Department through a grant from the New Jersey State Council
on the Arts, the Sculpture Garden has become an arena for the exhibition
of contemporary sculpture. The majority of the sculptures are sited on
a one-acre grassy field bordered by a wooded area on one side and academic
buildings on the other. Additional sculptures are positioned near walkways
and in other adjacent locations. Originally intended to showcase the works
of local artists, the scope of the Sculpture Garden has expanded to include
a much wider geographic area. Participating artists have come from Canada,
as well as from all regions of the U.S. Most of the works are of traditional
materials suited to outdoor exhibition, but some more temporary site-specific
pieces have been included as well. Each year, an independent judge selects
approximately eight works for an additional year, so that a sense of continuity
is provided for local viewers.
