Cedarhurst Sculpture Park Antoinette Ayres
Ayres' current work, such as From Here To There, is participatory in nature, meaning the viewer may enter into the sculpture. The focus is on experience and perception. Take note of what you think of this sculpture as you approach it from a distance; as you near it; as you discover it has an entrance; and as you enter into the piece and look skyward. The experiential aspect is further emphasized by the use of fragrant cedar wood for the shell, pungent beeswax for the inner lining, and crinkly pine needles as flooring. Nature is the ultimate inspiration for sculptor Antoinette Ayres. Her choice of materials such as wood, beeswax, and pine needles reflects this commitment. Another source of artistic inspiration is her fascination with ancient cultures and modes of living that are integrated with nature and its resources. The shapes of ancient dwellings (the beehive shape seen in From Here To There), the spiritual and physical honoring of the earth, and symbols such as the spiral have all made indelible impressions on Ayres' aesthetic imagination. A California native, Ayres has a degree in education as well as a B.A. degree in art history from the University of California in Irvine. She also holds B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in sculpture from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She has been included in sculpture exhibitions in Argentina, Israel, and in New York City where she currently resides. Home
