Cosimo Cavallaro
The Knot

Cosimo Cavallaro is a unique individual: multi-talented, intellectual, street-savvy, wildly independent, and keenly in sync with his emotional life . . . the anger as well as the joy. He is the founder and director of Emerald Films producing art/short films and commercials; he is also a painter and a sculptor. He has reinvented himself numerous times experiencing "birth" and "rebirth" as his life has unfolded in twists and turns. His art reflects his intensity of living what, for many of us would be, a complex life. In this sculpture titled, The Knot, Cosimo manipulates his interest in the multi-layered concept of "birth" [a giant umbilical cord . . . the twisted knots we encounter in life] as well as a play on words [knot and not] to express heartfelt emotions. He wrote the following:
KNOT – To prove to my father I am a man. KNOT – To except failure. KNOT – An anger. KNOT – A frustration. KNOT – Loosing control and expressing myself freely. KNOT – Excepting the judgement. KNOT – A difficult moment in my life. KNOT – Something one does all on his own. KNOT – A pleasing pain one gets used to.
Born in Montreal, Cosimo is first generation Italian. He attended art schools in Canada, Italy, and the United States. In 1988 Cosimo founded a film production company in Canada, moving it to New York City in 1995 where he currently lives and works. He made art world news on 20 May 1999 with Room 114, covering an entire hotel room, including the furniture, in Swiss cheese!
