The outdoor sculpture in the University of Cincinnati Fine
Arts Collection is situated primarily on the two main campuses of the
university, located in the Clifton neighborhood of Cincinnati and totaling
approximately 200 acres. These include the west (main) campus and the
east (medical) campus. The collection includes commemorative sculpture
honoring the accomplishments of important university figures, as well
as works of contemporary sculpture accompanying the construction of new
facilities completed as part of the university's ambitious master plan.
Many of the works of contemporary sculpture have been funded
through the State of Ohio Percent for Art Program. Others have been privately
funded. The collection presently includes notable works by Magdalena Abakanowicz,
Terry Allen, James Carpenter, George Rickey, and Joel Shapiro. A work
by Kenneth Snelson was recently purchased but will not be installed until
2003 due to construction schedules affecting the planned site for the
sculpture.
In addition, notable indoor pieces include works by Sam
Gilliam, Nam June Paik, and Tim Prentice. Currently, the outdoor sculpture
program is initiating temporary sculpture installations. The first will
be a commissioned piece by Patrick Dougherty and is scheduled for the
spring of 2002.
Free admission.
The outdoor sculpture is viewable 365 days per year.
