An old marble quarry reconverted by sculptress Nella Gollanda
and architect Aspasia Kouzoupis to an environmental sculpture site. Marbles
from the mountain of Dionyssos were used in antiquity for the making of
Greek famous sculptures and monuments.
It is a single-artist-designed park commissioned by "Dionyssos Marbles
Ltd." in 1995.
Artist Nella Gollanda designed this 35,000 sq.m. park during her visits
to the site. She explored the different groupings of stones, most of them
being left over material during the operation or behind the closing of
the quarry. Some of the abandoned installations have been re-used to consolidate
visitors needs. Small hand-made buildings built with same marble-stones,
match perfectly with the environment.
The stones were picked by the artist and placed in site by quarrymen,
Dry-wall techniques were used to match the wall-construction of the surrounding
country side.
The artificial hills accumulated from the quarried marble during the years
of operation, form steep slopes that can be visited through a sculpted
path and the support of old installations.
