The Hunter Museum of American Art is situated on a ninety-foot limestone bluff overlooking the Tennessee River on one side and downtown Chattanooga on the other. It operates in two very different buildings which function as a unit while retaining their unique visual integrity. A 1904 classical revival mansion and a contemporary structure completed in 1975, the buildings are linked with an outdoor sculpture garden.

Encircling the 3,000 square foot sculpture garden on the bluff is a wrought iron fence designed for the museum by renowned sculptor Albert Paley. Included within the sculpture garden are works by such artists as George Segal, John Henry and William King. Admission to this sculpture garden is included in the general admission charge to the museum.

Another portion of the museum's sculpture garden, which is available to the public free of charge, continues on the front lawn. This area is a public park and is highly accessible with the city's River Walk bisecting it. Visitors can see works by Brower Hatcher, John Dreyfuss, Alexander Calder and Wayne Trapp.
