IS! Is a unique project which takes the city of Washington,
DC as its grounds for sculpture placement. The DC commission on the Arts
and area businesses are joining with the IS! Staff and curators and artists
to place work at prominent locations. The Washington Convention center,
the National Public Radio Building, the Renaissance Hotel and the arena
Stage are the first buisnesses to host large scale outdoor works by prominent
regional and national sculptors. The first show is a 10-piece exhibition
curated by Sarah Tanguy on the theme of "Portals." The DC Chamber
of Commerce is producing a map which will guide sculpture enthusiasts
to the pieces and conveniently past the National Gallery’s new sculpture
garden and Hirshorn Museum’s, as well. Works are on loan for one year.
The project is an ongoing effort with the goals of placing dozens of sculptures
around Washington.
Participating sculptors include: John Van Alstine, David
Hess, Rodney Carroll, Chris Gardener, Jon Isherwood, Betsy Damos, Roberley
Bell, Foon Sham, Brent Crothers, and Emile Brzezinski.
Open every day, all day. Call for directions. Self guided
tours (schedule guided tours).
