In 1950, the City of Antwerp organized an international
exhibition of sculpture in the open in Middelheim Park. This event was
such a success that it was decided to exhibit sculptures on a permanent
basis in this splendid 50-acre park.
More than 40 years of acquisitions have formed a collection
which presents a selective view of modern sculpture from Rodin to the
present day.
In 1993 a rejuvenation programme was launched. The museum
now spans the entire park, and acquisitions are no longer made just to
fill historical gaps. On the occasion of Antwerp being named Cultural
Capital of Europe for 1993, the permanent collection was enriched with
works by Richard Deacon,Isa Genzken, Per Kirkeby, Harald Klingelhöller,
Bernd Lohaus, Matt Mullican, Juan Munoz, Panamarenko, Thomas Schütte
and Didier Vermeiren. These were exhibited in Lower Middelheim, where
the Biennials used to be held, and which is now reserved for contemporary
sculpture.
Between 1994 and 1999 the museum acquired Guillaume Bijl's
'Roman Street', Luciano Fabro's 'Bathers', Henk Visch's 'Telling no Lies',
Tony Cragg's 'Envelope' and Franz West's 'Sphairos' and 'Freie Form'.
In the year 2000 the museum grounds are extended to 25 acres.
These new grounds will be designed by the French team of landscape architects
Desvigne & Dalnoky.
A new sculpture depot has already been built by the Belgian
architect Stéphane Beel and will be ready for use next year.
The existing keepers' house will be converted into a book
shop and a central reception hall. Next to this building a new cafetaria
will be built. Finally, the Orangerie, housing the Documentation centre
and the museum's staff will be completely renovated.
