The sculpture park, owned by the municipality of Oslo, situated
in one of Oslo's residential areas, is one of Norway's most popular tourist
attractions, open all year, 24 hours free of charge. The park is totally
the work of one man as the 212 sculptures in bronze and granite were all
modelled in full size by the most renowned Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland
(1869-1943). Also the architectural elements and several wrought iron
gates were created by him. Although the municipality of Oslo was the main
contributor to the realisation of the Vigeland Park a number of private
companies and persons gave financial support.
The park covers an area of 80 acres where most of the sculptures
are placed on a 850 metre long axis divided into 5 main units: The Main
Gate, The Bridge with the children's playground, The Fountain, The Monolith
Plateau and the Wheel of life.
As it stands today, the Vigeland Sculpture Park is not a
product of one co-ordinated vision. It is the result of a creative process
in which additions have been made throughout forty years beginning with
the idea for the Fountain in 1900 ending with the design for the Labyrinth's
mosaic on the ground around the Fountain in 1942. The sculptures depict
all in one way or other the dramatic theme of the entire park: Man's journey
from cradle to grave through happiness and grief, through fantasy, hope
and wishes of eternity.
Free admission.
