The Wandell Sculpture Garden is owned and operated by the
Urbana Park District, a government agency that provides parks, recreational
facilities and recreation programs. The Wandell Sculpture Garden is part
of Meadowbrook Park, a 130-acre community Park containing a super-size
play structure, community organic gardens, a farmstead, an herb garden
and 60 acres of recreated native Illinois prarie. The sculpture garden
is situated amid 30 acres of prairie and contains large-scale pieces created
by sculptors with an established body of work. Each piece sits along a
portion of a three-mile hard surface trail through the prairie that doubles
as a pathway for walkers, bikers, and in-line skaters. A wide variety
of media are represented, including oak, stainless steel, bronze, and
concrete. The pieces on display are a combination of long-term loans from
the artists and loans from private collections. Each piece is loaned for
a minimum of two years.
