Artist Statement

I am Brazilian-born, of Japanese descent, and have lived in the United States since 1998. Moving to America was like becoming a child again: I could not speak, I was unfamiliar with social norms and traditions. In my sculptures, I play with found domestic objects and color to show a sense of discovery and belonging. Religious motifs act as a warning not to lose my own culture and values in the pursuit of acceptance.
