Grounded II, Mixed media, installation view, 2005.

Nearly all of the durable goods we purchase today are packaged in Styrofoam. I use this ubiquitous material not only because of its status as a by-product of consumerism, but also because it is for many people an iconic example of the artificial. In my recent work, the landscape (as represented by plants and soil) is highly aestheticized, presented as part of a prescribed experience, and designed to fit patterns dictated by commerce. These pieces are one part parody, one part proposal, and one part celebration.
