Up and Coming in London

The Young British Artists surged to prominence in the ’90s on the energy of their irreverent work and fearless use of London’s ample cheap and unpolished space. Since that time, Hirst, Emin, and their crew have become world-class established art stars, and the city that once provided a playground for them has grown prohibitively expensive for emerging artists and aspiring curators. Sculpture and installation artists have been particularly disadvantaged by the diminishing availability of affordable space in the capital. Yet a few plucky dealers and innovative artists are carving out places for a new generation of British artists who work in three dimensions. The recession brought into play London’s deep reserves of chutzpah and community spirit, qualities often overshadowed during boom times by curators with blockbuster budgets.
