From the Chairman

This issue of Sculpture features Allora & Calzadilla, the official U.S. representatives to the 54th Venice Biennale, and Toshikatsu Endo, who is also showing in Venice this summer at the Palazzo Bembo, as well as artists from Spain, Argentina, Canada, and the Czech Republic who investigate new and old technology in their work. This is the ISC at its best. We are an organization committed to the idea that the world is a better place with sculpture.

Today, there is a growing belief that people need and want purpose in their lives. In my experience, I have found that the people of great talent in both business and art are those with a strong sense of purpose, a true north. Purpose accounts for the drive to make a difference in the world. Purpose justifies an organization’s existence. For all of us at the ISC, purpose drives our decisions, allowing us to judge past performance and plan for the future.

The purpose of the ISC is clear in our vision and values. Our vision statement affirms that we “champion the creation and understanding of sculpture and its unique and vital contribution to society.” We value our constituents, including sculptors, institutions, and patrons. We value dialogue as the catalyst for innovation and understanding. We value education as fundamental to personal, professional, and societal growth. We value community as a place for encouragement and opportunity.

Every ISC member gains something unique from his or her participation in our organization. At the same time, we share a common purpose that drives us all and accounts for our success.

As you read this issue, recall the purpose of the ISC. It tells us that there is so much more to discover.

—Marc LeBaron
Chairman, ISC Board of Trustees
