Independent Visions
- A new landscape for the 21st Century Regenerating Independent Quarry,
Portland, England through the Arts, Industry and Earth Sciences.
Call for artists
- A ground-breaking project that does literally break ground has begun
this summer on the Isle of Portland, Dorset off the Southern English coast.
Under the guidance of Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust, a stone quarry
active for 150 years and now approaching the end of its working life is
being regenerated, using the arts as the driving force.
A programme of creative
design workshops, seminars, exhibitions, walks and talks are being staged
in order to allow a wide range of influences to shape the future quarry,
ranging from earth scientists and architects to artists and local
schoolchildren. As well as developing additional features in the quarry
such as a labyrinth and performance
space/amphitheatre, and a commission by sculptor Peter Randall-Page, the
project will look at future creative,
educational and leisure uses for this new public space.
The project is being
funded by DEFRA the UK Governments Department for Environment, Fishing
and Rural Affairs with additional funds from the Regional Arts Lottery
Programme. The project includes a consortium of partners working alongside
the Trust, including Albion Stone Quarries Ltd, who will support the creation
of the new landforms this autumn.
The Trust invites
professional sculptors with substantial experience of working in stone
and/or as part of landscape regeneration projects who are interested in
participating in this project to get in touch with Director Hannah Sofaer
