The ISC will hold the 2013 International Sculpture Symposium in Miami, Florida from December 1-4, 2013. Co-sponsored by the Florida International University and The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, and will bring together artists, collectors, curators and art enthusiasts for panel discussions, keynote addresses, optional tours, a reception, and a multi-day iron pour by the Iron Maidens, an international sculpture group. The symposium marks the first ISC program held in the city of Miami, spans four days, preceding Miami’s Art Basel, which takes place December 5-8, 2013. Artists and enthusiasts from around the world will have the opportunity to participate in a week of dynamic cultural events. |

Janet Echelman builds living, breathing sculpture environments that respond to the forces of nature -- wind, water and light -- and become inviting focal points for civic life. Exploring the potential of unlikely materials, from fishing net to atomized water particles, Echelman combines ancient craft with cutting-edge technology to create her permanent sculpture at the scale of buildings. Experiential in nature, the result is sculpture that shifts from being an object you look at, to something you can get lost in.
Recent prominent works include: “Her Secret is Patience” spanning two city blocks in downtown Phoenix, “Water Sky Garden” which premiered for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, “She Changes” on the waterfront in Porto, Portugal, and "Every Beating Second" in San Francisco Airport's new Terminal Two.
Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, Echelman was named Architectural Digest's 2012 Innovator for “changing the very essence of urban spaces.” Her TED talk "Taking Imagination Seriously" has been translated into 33 languages and is estimated to have been viewed by more than a million people worldwide. Janet Echelman is represented by the gallery CYNTHIA-REEVES.
Upcoming projects include the University of Oregon Matthew Knight Arena, and the remaking of Dilworth Plaza in front of Philadelphia City Hall -- turning it into a garden of dry-mist.
