I know that this title would have won little credence when I began my series of cast-bronze abstract skulls nearly twenty years ago, depicting events that were becoming inevitable. The accelerating multiplicity of these human-caused world problems are, for the most part, irreversible and inevitable and the awareness of many of them is finally being recognized in the developed world. They remain virtually invisible to the bulk of humanity who lives in extreme poverty and desperation.

            It seems to me like a “Perfect Storm” which in the near future will engulf not just us but the entire world.

            There are some who believe that technology will ameliorate or at least lessen these events and buy us some time. They hope conservation will reverse it. The drastic measures needed are notpolitically palatable to governments and special interests of enormous global corporations. Governments are incapable of changing this trajectory. World religions are likewise powerless or even worse, obstructionists.

My series of sixty-three bronze skulls, in editions of five, is now completed. They visually depict each of the major and self-interested ingredients of this potential catastrophe. They are:

1) overpopulation - 6.6 billion and counting     

2) global warming - 99% of world scientists agree

3) extinction of animals, insects and habitats. We are in the midst of the Sixth Extinction in the 4.5 billion year history of the planet earth

            4) starvation and migration of billions of humans

5) depletion of natural resources and our dependence on them, particularly fossil fuels, rain forest timber, clean water and over-fishing and on and on

6) nuclear proliferation and the clear potential for their irresponsible use by irresponsible leaders

7) man’s constant warfare for scarce resources and a myriad of other reasons in the past, present and future

8) globalization with its cultural and economic worldwide risks and unintended consequences

            9) finally the depictions of the actions of man and his motives which have led and are leading to the aforementioned problems, i.e. greed, the dark side of technology; genetic manipulation of plants and animals; over-consumption of unnecessary products in developed countries which is being emulated in other nations.

It is my wish that my series of sixty-three sculptures be purchased and sent on a traveling exhibit to all major cities of the world. The cumulative effect of such an exhibition would vastly increase awareness of this crisis. The work would ultimately reside in the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
