Neva Setlow : Plexiglas Sculpture
Neva Setlow's primary sculptural medium is plexiglas. Some constructions incorporate images, lenses and light. Recently, she created a series of viewer interactive works. Her work is often related to science and may have references to nature, genetics or the galaxies.
DNA Animals includes digital images that relate to the issue of cloning and the new horizons in the biological science. It is a non-judgmental work but presents the realization that there is a new relationship to the animal kingdom and perhaps ourselves. The text which surrounds it "MOVING FORWARD, OUR ADVANCES, OPEN QUESTIONS, OUR WORLD HAS CHANGED" was taken from her book The Ark of the 20th Century, a small pictorial book which represents our current situation.
Grandma's Quilt is constructed with Plexiglas, fresnel lenses and light. It is designed to be a viewer interactive work. The artist has created a reflective composition with plexiglas but additionally, allows the composition to be enhanced by the viewer's participation. The work has an internal area in which the viewer may move components to form new compositions. The work presents a contemporary approach to the quilt form and attempts to build a bond with the viewer.
