Richard Brachman creates public art with the intention of provoking thought on social issues that affect everyone. He uses a variety of media to convey his ideas including recycled wood, steel, fiberglass and resin, and standard construction materials. His background as an architect and builder gives him an appreciation of interior space as well as external massing. He incorporates this understanding by building sculpture with an open design showing both the exterior and the interior of the piece. By leaving the sculptures open, Brachman invites the viewer to visually or physically enter the sculpture and have a different experience from that of the viewing from the outside. The immediacy of climbing inside or on is a tactile experience that reinforces design, use of materials, building technique and the issues that inspire these works.

Brachman’s work has been exhibited in the New York metropolitan area including at Adelphi University in Garden City Long Island, Unison Arts Center in New Paultz, NY, Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory, Cold Springs, NY, Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, Brooklyn, NY, and Look Out Sculpture Park in Damascus, PA. His work is in the collections of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, The American Bible Society, NY, NY, and the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Brachman has received Puffin Award grants and has been co-curator of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition Outdoor Sculpture Show for the last seven years. Brachman was born in Trenton, NJ, 1952.
