STATEMENT
Much of what I try to do with my art is to make a human connection that is so simple it defies the ability of language to explain. That makes it difficult to talk about. The highly simple is almost always too complex to explain.
But there certainly is a lot that can be said about what I'm trying to do, what I think about, why I do what I do and what I hope to accomplish.
One of the things that most motivates me is beauty. Most people think beauty is a hard word to define, a complicated thing. But that's not at all how I feel about it. It is simple, and the plain old dictionary definition works fine. Beauty is the pleasurable characteristic that exalts the human spirit and mind.
I like the exaltation part. Here is something that we see or feel that expresses the greatness of the human spirit and mind. That is what art is supposed to do. It is supposed to touch something deep in us, something we don't intend or contrive, something that is already there. Art tries to find that something that is buried in us, all of us, and celebrates it. Exalts it. Frees it. Digs it up like ore, fires it and makes something useful out of it.
I am not creating beauty. I am creating art that unlocks it in the people who see my sculpture.
