ARTIST STATEMENT
Although I now work primarily in a variety of steels, plastics and most recently, titanium, the most enjoyable stage of creating a piece is the initial cutting of paper models. A fascination with origami coupled with a background in both graphic and product design often challenges me to treat metals as one would paper. I normally choose sheet or plate stock for material and rely on multiple, often parallel cuts, perforations, and a lot of “tugging” to coax a shape from its two-dimensional source. As a result, the forms have an innate simplicity and “airy” quality that is difficult to duplicate in other, more involved welded constructions or mixed media assemblies. When I began “expanding” works that incorporated this abundance of parallel cuts, moiré patterns naturally evolved that I now attempt to incorporate in the design of many of my pieces.
