ARTIST BACKGROUND
I was born in Newark, New Jersey, May 26, 1927, and moved to Trenton, where I started my sculptural studies with Jon Charry at the Trenton Junior College. I then when to New Mexico, where I studied with John Tatschl at the University of New Mexico, over a period from 1950 to 1957. While in New Mexico, I participated in shows at the Santa Fe Art Museum, the NM State Fair, Denver Art museum, Witchita Decorative Arts. I then transferred to the SF Bay area, where I lived for seven years. While there I participated in shows at the Richmond Art Museum, the Oakland Art Museum, the SAn Francisco Art Institute Annual, the Crocker Museum of Sacremento, and the California State Fair. I then transferred to Florence, Italy, where I have been since. In Italy I have participated in numerous shows in Tuscany, and have showed in privated galleries in Florence and Prato.
THE THEMES OF THE SCULPTURES
The themes of the sculptures of Arthur Koch are based on ideas from the Buddhism of Nicheren Daishonin, eg., Cause and Effect, The Growth of the Lotus, Karma, Reincarnation, and particulars from the Lotus Sutra such as The Voice Hearers, etc.
