BIOGRAPHY Alis Olsen is an environmental sculptor who uses natural materials to create art that explores our relationship with Nature. She works out- doors installing site specific work as well as studio pieces. She has exhibited widely, both locally and across the country. A photographer as well as a sculptor, she received her MFA in 1983 from the University of Minnesota. She is active in WARM (women’s Art Registry of Minnesota), served as its president and, through that organ- ization, has been mentoring young artists since 1994. She was founder and director of WOODSWORK, an environmental art project that had artists working in natural settings with related work in galleries. She has taught environmental art workshops in state parks as well as other outdoor venues. STATEMENT I am a sculptor who explores our relationship with Nature by creating work using natural materials, sometimes combined with manufactured objects. I feel that we have become separated from the earth and, as a result, we romanticize the wilderness while simultaneously exploiting its resources without regard for the possibility of depleting the supply. My artwork serves to illuminate these attitudes, and also connects us with the beauty of the earth by honoring some part of it that might go unnoticed. I believe strongly that we must reconnect with Nature in order to save ourselves as well as the earth.
