Ian O’Banion has been a practicing artist since 2002 when he graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in architecture.  While in architecture school he won an international design competition for his sculpture titled Fabric Playscape, which was published in Fabric Architecture magazine.  In 2007 he co-founded Studio San, a design firm, with which he has been engaged in shaping the built environment in San Francisco through small-scale interventions to the urban fabric.  His artwork has been shown in venues throughout San Francisco and is displayed at Medjool restaurant in San Francisco’s Mission District as part of their permanent collection.  Ian lives and works in San Francisco.

I am fascinated by how humans adapt, build, destroy, decorate, and cultivate their surroundings and the impact this has on the global environment.  The rapid pace at which people are changing the world both excites and disturbs me.  New ideas, technologies and physical materials in the form of consumer goods are spread around the planet as the global "market" expands.  In my art practice I use a variety of media to explore the relationship of people to their actual (physical) and perceived (mental) surroundings.  My current body of work, titled Boxed In, is a series of sculptures that examine the produce-consume-discard cycle.  Work from this series can be see on my website at
