ARTIST STATEMENT

Public Art or Art in Public Spaces has long been a passion of mine. The idea of working in art on a large-scale, having a broad audience and integrating one’s work into architecture or into a landscape has been a primary focus of mine for over 25 years.

My work has been integrated into architecture and landscape on a major scale on projects all over the globe. Over the course of my career I have won more than 50 Public Art Awards across the United States and completed more than 150 private commissions. Projects have included Airports, Transportation Centers, Parking Garages, Hotels, Museums, Civic Buildings, Recreation Centers, Private Corporations, Hospitals, Residences and Gateway projects.

I believe that art, especially public art, should engage the viewer while communicating something relevant to the community – creating a connection between the person and the place. To apply this philosophy to my work, I focus on content that tells a story, either directly, or inferred.

My approach to public art is threefold: First, because I strive to create a dialogue between the art and architecture, I work to understand the aesthetic established by the architecture and landscape of the site. Second, I consider what the space is used for and who uses it. How will the art relate to the daily users of the building? Should the art be contemplative? Challenging? Entertaining? Educational? Lastly, I ask myself what I can bring to the project that will breathe life and spirit into the installation.

I try to make the emotions and thoughts that the concept evokes in me tangible to others through the use of the various materials I have incorporated into my palette. Over the past 25 years, I’ve worked with glass on a large scale, integrated into curtain wall systems, suspended glass sculptures, railings and doors. I also have extensive experience working with salvaged materials, bronze, aluminum, steel, water, and fiber optics. My choice of materials is guided by what best serves the project goals.

All of the work I design requires little or no maintenance and is fabricated in-house, by my team in our Bay Area studio, which is internationally recognized as an innovative, creative and highly professional establishment. It is known for our artistic integrity and the quality of our craftsmanship.
