Mary Giehl was a Registered Nurse for 22 years working in the Pediatric ER, Pediatric ICU and Transport. In 1985 she returned to school to study Fiber Arts at Syracuse University. She graduate in 1989 with her BFA in Fiber Arts, and received her Master’s in Fine Arts in Sculpture in 1992. Mary now teaches part time at Syracuse University in Fiber/Materials Studies and had taught in the sculpture department for 15 years.
She has exhibited through out the North East, including solo shows at the Phoenix Gallery, NYC, Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE, Rochester Contemporary, Rochester, Acme Art Company, Columbus, OH, Indianapolis Art Center, and many others since 1988. She has been included in many group exhibitions. She has been the recipient of many grants including the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts Grant, the Puffin Foundation Grant, NYFA and many others.
She is active in the community was the Chairperson of the Westcott Art Gallery, on the Board of Directors for the center presently on the Board of director for Light Works and has been involved in other community projects. Mary was an artist in residence at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, traveled to Ecuador 2007 as an artist-in residence and I Park in CT. There have been many articles and reviews written on her work.
