Artist Statement
In their formal transformation of the two-dimensions of ink painting into the three-dimensions of sculpture, my works conceptually confront and reconcile the Zen “mind” with the vocabulary of Western abstract painting. Nothingness trumps existence; white supplants black, movement overcomes form-- in such ways do I seek to create contemporary art works that embody the metaphysics of an Eastern consciousness.
Ink painting is an essential creative step in my initiating a sculptural creation. But I am not simply referring to the drawing of a preliminary sketch or study of my intended final creation. Rather, these are experiments in anticipating the salient features of the sculpture I am envisioning through the black-and-white interplay, textural qualities and unique spatial sensibility and dynamics of ink painting in two-dimensions. The most obvious departure from traditional ink painting is in a deliberately intensified focus on the purely spatial and structural vocabulary of the painting surface, transcending its normal representational aesthetic and subject matter.
Ink painting possesses a mysterious power that makes it the best language with which to express the mysticism of Eastern culture. But it is ultimately only a two-dimensional, surface medium. And because of this nature, it always exists in a fantasy world. I want to use clay, use bronze, and use my understanding of ink painting to revive and renew it, to fill in its emptiness, render it concrete, so that in the cold smoothness or rough physicality of the bronze can be felt the mysterious power of Eastern ink painting.
