ARTIST STATEMENT:
I am fascinated by the interplay of strength and fragility, the balance between safety and vulnerability. I am captivated by the exchanges that occur between entities, each exploring secrets held by the other. In the midst of a culture that has commodified relationships, I explore the sacredness of interconnection.
Standing, moving, and touching the steel I find that when creating one form it easily evolves into three more. They shift and mutate as I play, encouraging repetition and surprise. Connections are drawn in the large sculptures through the geometry, materials, and colors. By creating templates, patterns that hold the steel into specific shapes while I am welding, the steel sculptures all carry a strong connection through their origin and geometry.
Sitting, kneeling, and tinkering with the found objects to create the small pieces is personal and meditative. These pieces seem to spring from my fingers unconsciously, the found objects dictating their own roles. Discovery comes from the working with the materials: steel, twine, horsehair, clay, wire, leather, velvet, glass, crab claws, bamboo, rubber and more.
These pieces are meditations on the interactions between entities. They encompass thoughts about relationships in all forms: interactions between humans, viewers and art, and our relationships with the universe and other beings.
