I am a left-handed Aquarian art-maker in the tradition of some of history’s most zealous artists. Entering my studio you can always find some works-in-progress in progress. Currently there are a couple of nine-foot tall aluminum columns in the works whose flat surfaces appear three-dimensional. Mystery has surrounded this large brick studio behind my house in Jersey City where a conglomeration of traditional tools and sketchpads are strewn amid dragon fly wings and super-mini-plastic cows. Smaller works are also gestating found objects, which are waiting to find their places in the myriad of small aluminum and glass pieces. My treasures are often gathered from human discards on the street and nature’s discards on logging roads.
New York City raised me. Dyslexia prevented me from reading at an early age. To compensate my mother introduced me to a non-reading voice… clay; and from age nine to eighteen I half lived in the art school of the Brooklyn Museum.
I spent my college ‘Junior Year Abroad’ in Paris studying sculpture at the Ecole Nationale Superieur des Beaux Arts where I lived the Paris life of an art student. To earn money to go to graduate school I worked as a youth parole officer in Brooklyn's Bedford Stuyvesant area.
Becoming a father, and then a mostly single parent, has been an extraordinary experience which simply imbued a depth in my work.
When my son Andrew was ten years old, he and I toured for six months around the world with a traveling exhibition of my work. Lets talk about it sometime.
When I received tenure at the University I built a cabin/studio in the woods of Cape Breton Island where my son and I spent every summer. Not having electricity didn’t seem important then.
Throughout my career I have embraced innovative and inventive solutions to visual/aesthetic/material challenges.
