The circumstances that I’ve reflected on in my work parallel odd notions of struggle within identity, mortality, and social tendencies. The affects that these seemingly inescapable features have on people are interesting to me because they are often the result of some form of conflict—internal or external, sublime or secondary. In my work I use the figure to serve as my visual language, which in its own right bears a sensible quality that can lie just below the surface of an expression or gesture. By using various elements of the figure I’m able to express my personal thoughts on the human condition while joining the viewer in contemplation of its different aspects.
Ideas are personal and they usually remain that way. As an artist I believe it’s always good practice to try to realize some ideas in such a way that will make them timelessly accessible to their audience. I also like my work to be able to exist in space in a way that feels cohesive and so that one sculpture will lend to the next. The materials I use are chosen based upon how appropriate they are in communicating my ideas clearly while still managing an allusive quality that grants the viewer a certain freedom in its interpretation.
