ARTIST STATEMENT

An avid collector as long as I have been making art, my sculpture has always been colored by my longtime fascination with "the object".  Most intriguing to me (as evidenced in my work) is a sculpture's relationship to the wall where it's hung, the viewer and the gallery space.  Detailed information about the placement of my sculptures is usually included in early sketches of proposed works.  My pieces are often found near or hanging from the ceiling rather than placed on a pedestal.  In one show, my piece "Tower", a rolling pin like play on the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, hovered just beyond the balcony of the ballroom that once occupied the Hyde Park Art Center.

While my sculptural pieces appear to¬ serve a purpose other than art, the function of the oftentimes eccentric, seemingly worn tool, appliance or artifact is not as obvious as the fire hydrant, light switch or sconce that might occupy a similar spot on the wall.  My work occasionally references recent (last five centuries) and ancient artistic and cultural/ethnographic prototypes.  Also, living in Chicago with its rich architectural past, along with the occasional search abroad for Buddhist temples, Romanesque monuments as well as more recent cutting edge structures has added an architectural influence to my work.
