Sculptor Chas A. Colburn Info - Sculpture.org

Chas. Colburn was born in Rahway New Jersey in March of 1953. He received a degree in Business Administration from the Gardner School of Business in 1971, and a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Maryland in 1976. In 1979 he founded CHALCO Metal Works, a custom metal working shop in which he creates his own sculpture and provides fabricating, Computer Aided Design & Drafting, consulting, art handling, and installation services to the local Arts, Museum, and Exhibit communities. In 1989 he became a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Artist’s Statement

My current work reflects my interest in mathematical relativity in form. These works are the result of my research into the realms of: Mathematics, Music, Crystallography and Chaos Theory. Each sculpture is made up of parts, be they: plates, rolled plates, or pipes; which are related to each other by a set of initial conditions and consistent developmental parameters: somewhat akin to Rounds in music.

I use a computer aided design (CAD) program to manipulate the geometry, its mathematical progressions, and record the steps as I develop form in a virtual (what if?) environment. I am currently investigating four different series of works:

The ONE SIDED series: Mobius strips generated from 6 flat planes.

The PIPE series: Connected pipes developed from hexagons.

The TET-CAP series: Based on cylinders arranged around a tetrahedron in a consistent fashion and then stripped down to reveal a capsule which forms inside.

The Cycling Forces series: Based on portions of cylinders arranged in a consistent fashion around a hexagon made of 6 flat planes.

My interest in creating this kind of artwork is one of provocation. Many times we pass by simple things in our rush for knowledge; and we try to sort out the complex. In this rush to know, it is difficult to see the building blocks of the world around us. I hope that my sculptures will help to set a course for the contemplation of the seemingly simple and inevitable things in our lives as we develop a sense of discovery, and appreciation of our interdependent existence with earth.
