Jim Collins is primarily a sculptor working in a figurative manner, best exemplified by his long running series the WATCHER.  His sculpture style has been characterized by the use of silhouette figures constructed of stainless steel, aluminum and other metals. In the early 1960’s he was carving female figures from logs of walnut and elm, finishing them with appliqués of copper, brass, lead, and in some cases fine fur and leather. Each carved figure was a statement about the contemporary style and fashion. Collins was a Professor of Art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1966 until 1983 when he resigned that teaching position to devote full time to his career as a professional artist.
Collins has an extensive and impressive exhibition record including numerous solo shows, invitationals, and competitions. Presently he concentrates mostly on private and public commissions. He received an A.B. degree from Marshall University in West Virginia, a M.P.H. degree from the University of Michigan, and a M.F.A. degree in sculpture from Ohio University. There is more information in the Dictionary of American Sculptors and Who’s Who in American Art.

SELECTED COMMISSIONS:

In 2004 a major sculpture commission for County Limerick in Ireland that consisted of 32 separate larger than life-sized colorful silhouettes of cows, deer, and horses. There are four groupings along major highways (N7 and N21) and have become landmarks for the communities of Adare and Limerick, as well as, the road to Dublin. The sculptures are highly visible by auto traffic speeding by at 60 mph.

Another Public Art project was nine MILE MARKERS, powder coated stainless steel figurative sculptures, placed at intervals along a seven and one-half mile River Walk by the Tennessee River in Chattanooga. This project was installed in September 2007.
