The time leading up to and during the creation of this piece correlated with my brotherʼs arrest and subsequent sentencing. I can only imagine the mental stresses incurred during oneʼs own criminal apprehension. Physically being put into chains; being present while several men forcibly search your house; being assigned a number, and the stigma that comes with it, that you will carry with you for the rest of your life; the inevitable incarceration. For the next few years he will live a life without living. This work was also inspired by by a divorced mom who I have been working closely with for two years. By getting to know her I have discovered that she seems to feel that itʼs just not a priority to let someone into her life romantically. This feeling, coupled with the sense that she wouldnʼt have the time to date due to raising two kids, has left her guarding her heart. She recently told me that she is very particular of the few men that she has dated and of the even fewer romantic interest she has allowed to meet her children. This alludes to her guarding them as much as herself.Although they have scars that will not be forgotten, I have placed on this work reminders to both of these people to “Live happier” and “Someone who has what you have is out doing what youʼre not.” To some these words can be tough to heed. When you are young you feel that everyone could love you but after youʼve been through some intense mental trauma you know that not everyone will.
