The Carrying Stones project will debut its first major sculpture, titled Ties That Bind, at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco on September 23, 2016.
The Carrying Stones project by Bay Area artist Sawyer Rose is a series of a sculpture, performance and video works that explores the “double burden” carried by women who work at paid jobs who are also responsible for unpaid domestic labor at home. The project documents the physical, emotional, and practical effects of these burdens.
47 women are currently tracking the hours they spend on paid work, unpaid work, and other activities in a custom web application built for this project. The Ties That Bind sculpture will be a data visualization of those hours, made of 1000 handmade tiles, each representing an hour of time worked.
The 1000 tiles in the Ties That Bind sculpture will be tied together in a public performance on September 23rd, 2016, 5-8pm at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture by a group of women.
