Andy Zimmermann: Sailing to the Edge at BSG

In his solo exhibition Sailing to the Edge, Zimmermann explores translucent materials in his sculpture, embracing their subtle ability to filter light and images. His interest in re-using and recycling materials led him to arrive at used, weathered sails as a primary material. While sailing with his brother Barney in Narragansett Bay, Zimmermann became intrigued with the various types of fabric, with different optical qualities, that are used to make sails for the boats. Ellen Schön’s solo exhibition (Re)Generation features a new series of ceramic totems. Originally inspired by her daughter’s pregnancy, the series evolved during the artist’s residency at the Guldagergaard International Ceramics Research Center in Skaelskor, Denmark. Schön’s practice has embraced the capacity of ceramic vessels to evoke the gesture and stance of the human figure.
