On Thursday, October 24, 2019, Coleen Sterritt, of Long Beach City College (LBCC), was awarded International Sculpture Center's (ISC) outstanding Educator Award for 2019. The ceremony was held on the Liberal Arts Campus at LBCC (Long Beach, CA).
Over 125 of Coleen's colleagues, friends, and students gathered to pay tribute to the LBCC Sculpture Program Coordinator and Professor. The evening included the Educator Award ceremony and reception, the opening of the college's Alumni Art Show, and the Visual and Media Art Department's Open Studio Night.
Presentation of the award was given by ISC Executive Director, Johannah Hutchison, as she paid tribute to Coleen's success as an artist, educator, and mentor. Hutchison said "Its an important moment for (the ISC) in that we are recognizing the value of art education at the community college level for the first time". The ISC received an overwhelming number of recommendations on behalf of Coleen's candidacy for the award. Consistently described as innovative and inspirational, Coleen truly embodies the qualities inherent in the evaluative basis of this award.
The ISC established the Outstanding Educator Award program in 1996 to recognize individual artist-educators who have excelled at teaching sculpture in institutions of higher learning.
