The
Adirondack - Sacandaga River Sculpture Park is a single artist designed
park featuring the work of internationally recognized sculptor John Van
Alstine. The 8 acre parcel is nestled along the banks of the historic
Sacandaga River, in the quaint hamlet of Wells, NY located in south central
section of the Adirondack State Park. The grounds, once part of a 19th
century wood products mill, are wonderful landscaped showcasing an ongoing,
changing exhibition of the sculpture of John Van Alstine, whose work is
held in many national collection including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture
Garden, Smithsonian Institution. His work is also currently on exhibit
at many other parks and gardens including the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture
Garden, in Lincoln, Mass., Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton, NJ, Phoenix
Museum Sculpture Garden, Phoenix, AZ and the gardens at the Gulbenkian
Foundation Collection, Lisbon, Portugal among others.

Special
events open to the public such as concerts or artist lectures are scheduled
and held in the music shed during the summer months. Events have been
particially funded by the NYS Council on the Arts.
The
park is part of an restored historic complex of six buildings that include
the artist’s home, studio, indoor gallery and showrooms. The Adirondack Architectural Heritage
group awarded the complex its 2000 "historic reuse" award,
which annually recognizes exemplary historic preservation work thoughtout
the Adirondack Park region.
