On March 31st, 1960, the International Sculpture Center held the 1st National/International Sculpture Conference at the University of Kansas. Today, the ISC has developed into an organization that serves a growing international membership and demonstrates a commitment to educate the public about contemporary sculpture through progressive programs, conferences, symposia, and tours.

Since its inception, the International Sculpture Center has given the sculpture community an avenue with which to share new ideas, techniques, and strategies, and has built the largest community of contemporary sculptors in the world.

The following are just a few of the major achievements built over the last 50 years:

  • Twenty-four winners have received the Lifetime Achievement Award, each recognized for making exemplary contributions to the field of sculpture.

  • Six educators have been awarded the ISC’s Outstanding Educator Award, each who have effectively and passionately communicated their knowledge and personal experiences gained through the creation of their own work to a countless number of students throughout their careers.

  • Eleven patrons have been awarded the Patron’s Recognition Award to recognize their exemplary contributions to the advancement of the arts.

  • The International Sculpture Center has published three books on contemporary sculpture, distributed by the University of Washington Press through our recently inaugurated ISC Press. A fourth book is currently in production, due to come out in 2011.

  • Our Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award has been held for 17 years, awarding 211 undergraduate and graduate students who were nominated by faculty members of their institutions for demonstrating exceptional talent in the contemporary art field, and then viewed and selected by a distinguished panel of jurors. Winning students are now able to participate in a traveling Student Award exhibition, which is sponsored by art organizations across the country.

  • The International Sculpture Center’s website was launched in 1997, and today receives over 1 million unique “hits” monthly.

  • In 2009, Sculpture magazine began offering a digital version of its publication.

  • There have been 22 Biennial International Sculpture Conferences, including conferences in Kansas, New Orleans, Toronto, Washington, DC, Oakland/San Francisco, Philadelphia, Providence, Chicago, Houston, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Grand Rapids, and London, UK.

  • The International Sculpture Center has held 7 symposia and smaller, more intimate conferences in New Orleans, Yorkshire, UK, Hamilton, NJ, Salt Lake City and Cincinnati.

  • The International Sculpture Center has published over 227 issues of Sculpture magazine (as of October 2010) in 29 years.

  • ISC Membership includes over 8,000 sculptors, institutions, and other sculpture enthusiasts.

  • The ISC is currently embarking on a 5 year strategic plan.

  • 30,000 copies of Sculpture magazine are distributed monthly.

  • A members-only edition of Sculpture includes the Insider newsletter, which offers information on professional employment, commissions, and exhibition opportunities for sculptors
