From the Director

Happy New Year!

2006 is a special year for the ISC because we will be celebrating the 45th anniversary of the organization and the 25th anniversary of Sculpture magazine.

With this issue you will notice some changes to the magazine, reflected in a new streamlined design. We have also been making changes to our Web site. We are working to improve the look of our materials as well as the nature of the information and services that we provide to members and to the field in general. Our membership is growing, as is the interest of others in the field of contemporary art. We are planning a special anniversary edition of the magazine in September of 2006 and also an anniversary party—check our Web site for further details.

We are also preparing to publish a book to celebrate this anniversary. A Sculpture Reader will include 41 articles drawn from the magazine since 1981, featuring artists from the U.S., Asia, Europe, and Latin America. This book also launches ISCpress, a publishing venture that will focus on topics related to contemporary sculpture. All ISCpress books will be distributed by the University of Washington Press.

We are also busy with plans for new events and programs this year. A forthcoming symposium on the sculpture of Willie Cole will be held in April at the Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, New Jersey; and our next ISC conference, Crossroads Cincinnati 2006, is scheduled for June 21–24, 2006. Among other conference events, we will honor our Outstanding Educator Award recipient Edward Mayer, from SUNY at Albany. The ISC is expanding its resources globally, as we network with other arts organizations on future conferences and events both in the U.S. and abroad.

In the last few months, I have met some of you at events in Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, and New York (I especially appreciated seeing so many ISC supporters at the ISC Gala honoring Magdalena Abakanowicz). I plan to continue to meet you, hear from you, and discuss with you the development and direction of the ISC. We are working on several events that will take place across the U.S. so that the ISC staff can meet face to face with members, supporters, patrons, and advertisers.

This looks to be a busy year for the organization, and I look forward to working with our staff, the Board of Directors, and you, our readers and members, to make it successful.

Michael Klein
ISC Executive Director
