Marc Leuthold: Cosmic Clay
by Ivy Cooper

“Marc Leuthold: Sculpture 1995–2010,” an impressive mid-career retrospective of works by the New York-based ceramicist at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, Missouri, also included a major new installation. Offering crystallizes the formal and thematic concerns present in all of Leuthold’s work and continues his ongoing challenge to the traditions and assumptions that have relegated ceramics to the margins of contemporary art. Staging the exhibition at the Daum may be seen as part of this challenge. Alongside painting and photography, sculptural ceramics form a particularly strong part of the museum’s permanent collection. Founding director Douglass Freed acquired Leuthold’s floor-based Four Times, White Wheel (2000) for the museum in 2004. The Daum’s current director, Tom Piché, is also a ceramics enthusiast and longtime Leuthold supporter.

Mauve, 2004. Ceramic, 21 x 21 x 5 in.
