Tom Grubb is a native of North Carolina, United States of America. Grubb received B.S.degrees in political science and history from Appalachian State University and taught math in the public school system for five years. He was drafted during the Vietnam War and during his time in service he taught missile technology. His work as a sea captain in the North Atlantic Ocean along with his experiences noted above were the inspiration for his unique art form and his exploration of "time" and "space". Grubb received a Master of Fine Arts degree from East Carolina University and is currently the Executive Director of the Fayetteville Museum of Art, Fayetteville, North Carolina. His work has been exhibited and is in collections and museums in the United States and abroad.

The designs for his sculptures are inspired from the artists' interest in celestial navigation and the instruments used in the field of navigation (i.e. compass, sexton, parallel ruler, etc.). His site-specific installations are abstract images using navigational instruments and ships of exploration (seafaring, aircraft and space ships) as a point of departure. Grubb uses the celestial sphere for the background of his sculptures and he seeks to reestablish the connection between art and science, the earth and the cosmos.
